: Yes I know we all love to rant about 'cruel and unusual punishment' (was it really so bad?).
: The real point is that, when I watch Henry IV and V, thanks to Mac, I understand what is going on - yet when I watch David Tenant's brilliant performance as Hamlet - because I did not 'do that' with 'Mac' - I simply don't.

Surely the "Point of Education" is to teach us how to learn. Otherwise our learning stops when we are no longer taught. I never had to endure "Big Mac". I did have the benefit of Richard Scrowston RIP, an eccentric yet inspirational teacher. He taught me to enjoy and appreciate literature. This, I have continued to do, long after he stood at the front of a class in which I sat. I hope my enjoyment still is coupled with some of the critical intellectual curiosity, he inspired.
Physical abuse of students? - certainly difficult to justify now although it was commonplace at St Augustine's. Maybe less so in other schools AT that time.
