Section A.(St. Mark). Answer all questions.
  1. ‘Someone is following me, someone who is more powerful than I, and I am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.’
    Who is speaking? Who will follow?
  2. The first four disciples (two pairs of brothers) all had the same profession.
    Name them. What profession did they follow?
  3. The Pharisees accused Jesus of eating with tax collectors and sinners, What justification did Jesus make for himself?
  4. Jesus often performed miracles on the sabbath. Name two of these.

  6. Where was Jesus, and what was he doing, when he was asked to calm the storm?

  1. What would life in Palestine have been like at the tine of Jesus (include references to geography, religion and politics)?
  2. Give a brief history of Palestine up to the time of Jesus.
  3. Write short notes on four of the following:

  4. What effects did the Roman occupation have on life in Palestine during the first century?
Section c. Answer two questions.
  1. Give a detailed account of the birth of Christ as recorded by either Matthew, or Luke. (In the case of the latter include the birth of John the Baptist).
  2. Compare and contrast the different accounts of Christ’s birth recorded in Luke and Matthew. Why should they be so different?
  3. Describe the teaching of John the Baptist.
  4. Chose four of the following, and answer the questions set:
    i) The genealogy of Christ recorded by Matthew and by Luke.
    Comment on the differences between them. What do the different genealogies tell us about the interests of the two authors
    ii) ‘Son, why have you treated us so? Behold your father and I have been looking for you anxiously’.
    Why, when and by whom was this said? What answer was given?
    iii) ‘And you child will be called prophet of the Most High.’
    Who said this? Of whom was he speaking? Say briefly how the prophecy was fulfilled.
    iv) ‘In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea.’
    What are we told about the appearance and way of life of John?
    v) ‘And the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, then they brought him to Jerusalem.’
    Which two people did they meet in Jerusalem? Give, in your own words, the song that is attributed to one of them on this occasion.
    vi) ‘Do not be afraid to take Nary home as your wife because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit’.
    What do the angel’s words tell us of the character of Joseph? Why was it necessary for him to become the foster-father of Christ?
