My dear Mr Stavordale,
It was most kind of you and your fellow-students to invite me, along with my colleagues on the teaching staff, to the End of Year Celebrations on 24th June last, and you may be assured that I intended to go and looked forward to the event with much pleasure.
However, as you may have heard, my mother died recently, in fact she had died just the day before, and I did not have the heart to take part in any such celebration. I do not think I need to explain any more but want to leave you in no doubt that I wish you all well and look forward to meeting you at other reunions in future years.
With most cordial good wishes,

(F.J. McGUINESS)
Headmaster
