The Rev. F. J. McGuiness, S.T.L., M.A.,
Head Master,
St. Augustines Grammar School,
Manchester, M22 4PJ
Right Reverend and dear Monsignor,
The year of 2026 is now with us and I am sure that the Headmaster looks forward with anticipation to hearing how all, or almost all, Old Boys and teaching staff emeriti have conducted themselves during the previous year - herewith my personal account.
You will be pleased to hear that I have completed the much overdue and needed re-write of the Old Boys website: the electronic reincarnation and manifestation of the establishment that was proud to be called St. Augustine's Grammar School.
Many years have passed since we travailed in those magenta stripes and most of us have toiled though our professional lives to move onward to arrive a time of reflection, having accomplished all that we could attain. We now have families of of own: our sons, and daughters, educated and in their turn moved on to find their place in this increasingly turbulent world.
In July, I greatly enjoyed meeting with many of my friends and colleagues from my school days; All united by the bond that was first forged at Sharston Mount. Ale was imbibed and stories retold. Alas there were absent faces that would be seen no more.
You will no doubt be aware that increasing numbers of old boys and many staff emeriti have passed on from this world - it may indeed be possible that the Headmaster has been able to renew their aquaintance.
I myself have have have had some health issues but thankfully remain rooted on terra firma.
2026 has been slow to start due to the advent of inclement though seasonal weather; however more enduring and increasingly warmer and brighter days are before us.
