"The school has been called a Grammar Technical" said Fr McGuiness. "This term indicates both the esteem for academic quality and intellectual integrity of the traditional grammar school and the new approaches." (1965)

The school opened in 1965 as St Augustine's Grammar Technical School

By 1967, the word Technical dropped from name to simply become St Augustine's Grammar School, a change in status as well as name. This was apparently achieved by the headmaster deleting the word from the board at the front of the school and from all stationary. Letters addressed to St Augustine's Grammar Technical School were reputedly returned to the addressee with a reminder to use the correct address. Letters addressed to St Augustine's Grammar School, Wythenshawe were similarly returned with a reminder to use the correct address (Sharston Mount M22 4PJ)

This change in status was seemingly tolerated by higher authorities and by the time of our entry in 1969, there was no suggestion of Grammar Technical status.

It is interesting to note that two other Manchester RC Schools achieved similar transitions (possibly following St Augustine's):

St Gregory's Technical School became a Grammar School
Marist Girl's Technical School became a High School.
